I wanted to disagree, but I knew enough to keep my mouth shut. Otherwise, my landlord will be calling for the police because two full-grown men are screaming at each other at two a.m.

So I tried to think about how to pack my things instead. The artefacts of my past, present, and future in a single, dusty jumble, sprawling across my cramped room. Blank planners, pens, plush toys. I never realised there was so much of it. And I packed all of it up, unsure if I knew where I’d put all of it back home.

‘You did good work there okay?’ You managed to continue. ‘No one else could keep up with those trade policies like you did. I think you would’ve been a manager by now if you had the right boss.’

‘Yeah. If only.’
